Thyroid cancer

The incidence of thyroid cancer has increased exponentially over the last three to four decades. There are many reasons for this, including the increasing ease of access to thyroid ultrasound, meaning that many small cancers are now identified long before causing problems.

From the outset, it is important to recognise that outcomes for patients with thyroid cancer are generally very good. However, it is also important that you benefit from the opinion of an ANZES recognised endocrine surgeon regarding what such a diagnosis may mean for you and your family. There are numerous different types of thyroid cancer and investigation and treatment options differ, depending on the patient and the disease.

Increasingly, an improved knowledge of the molecular biology of thyroid cancer is assisting with both diagnostics and treatment approaches. This was the topic of Professor Gundara’s PhD thesis and he maintains and active research brief in this area. Seeing an ANZES recognised and academic endocrine oncology surgeon ensures that you will be managed by a clinician with an up to date and in depth understanding of the latest advancements in thyroid cancer care in order to optimise outcomes.
