Hyperthyroidism

‘Thyrotoxicosis’ refers to a clinical state of elevated circulating thyroid hormone which can be a result of numerous different pathologies. ‘Hyperthyroidism’ however, is a form of thyrotoxicosis driven by over-production from the thyroid gland itself. Hyperthyroidism itself can be due to a diffuse thyroid disease (eg. Graves disease or toxic multinodular goitre) or a more focal process (eg. toxic nodule). Management options generally involve consideration of medication, radioactive iodine or surgery. Treatment should be tailored to the disease, the patient and their individual circumstances. Seeing an ANZES recognised endocrine surgeon will ensure that you find the most appropriate solution to the clinical problem.
