A parathyroid adenoma is a benign tumour of the parathyroid gland. This is the most common cause of pHPT (roughly 80%) and results in elevated PTH and calcium levels. Single adenomas are typically identified on imaging and facilitate a minimally invasive approach to excise the single diseased gland. Occasionally, double (or multiple) adenomas may be found and also warrant surgery to be excised. In general, simple excision of the affected gland/s is all that is necessary to cure the problem.
